An Introduction to Plastic Recycling
Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastic and reprocessing the material into useful products, sometimes completely different in form from their original state.
Plastics are durable, lightweight and inexpensive materials. They can readily be molded into various products which find uses in a plethora of applications. Every year, more than 100 million tons of plastics are manufactured across the globe. Around 200 billion pounds of new plastic material is thermoformed, foamed, laminated and extruded into millions of packages and products. Consequently, the reuse, recovery and the recycling of plastics are extremely important.
Why Do We Recycle Plastic Bottles?
Plastic is a versatile and inexpensive material with thousands of uses, but it is also a significant source of pollution. Some worrisome emerging environmental issues involve plastics, including gigantic oceanic garbage patches and the microbeads problem. Recycling can alleviate some of the problems, but the confusion over what we can and cannot recycle continues to confound consumers. Plastics are particularly troublesome, as different types require different processing to be reformulated and re-used as raw material. To effectively recycle plastic items, you need to know two things: the plastic number of the material, and which of these types of plastics your municipality's recycling service accepts. Many facilities now accept #1 through #7 but check with them first to make sure.
Quick Plastic Recycling Facts
Recycling by the Numbers
The symbol code we are familiar with - a single digit ranging from 1 to 7 surrounded by a triangle of arrows - was designed by The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) in 1988 to allow consumers and recyclers to differentiate types of plastics while providing a uniform coding system for manufacturers.
The numbers, which 39 U.S. states now require to be molded or imprinted on all eight-ounce to five-gallon containers that can accept the half-inch minimum-size symbol, identify the type of plastic. According to the American Plastics Council, an industry trade group, the symbols also help recyclers do their jobs more effectively.
#1 Grade: The easiest and most common plastics to recycle are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
#2 Grade: HDPE (High-density polyethylene plastics) .These include heavier containers that hold laundry detergents and bleaches as well as milk, shampoo, and motor oil. Plastic labeled with the number 2 is often recycled into toys, piping, truck bed liners, and rope. Like plastic designated number 1, it is widely accepted at recycling centers.
#3 Grade: Polyvinyl chloride, commonly used in plastic pipes, shower curtains, medical tubing, vinyl dashboards, gets number 3. Once recycled, it can be ground up and reused to make vinyl flooring, window frames, or piping.
#4 Grade: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is used to make thin, flexible plastics like wrapping films, grocery bags, sandwich bags, and a variety of soft packaging materials.
#5 Grade: PP, Some food containers are made with the stronger polypropylene plastic, as well as a large proportion of plastic caps.
#6 Grade: PS (Polystyrene)
Number 6 goes on polystyrene (commonly called Styrofoam) items such as coffee cups, disposable cutlery, meat trays, packing "peanuts" and insulation. It can be reprocessed into many items, including rigid insulation. However, the foam versions of plastic #6 (for example, cheap coffee cups) pick up a lot of dirt and other contaminants during the handling process, and often just ends up being thrown away at the recycling facility.
#7 Grade: Last are items crafted from various combinations of the aforementioned plastics or from unique plastic formulations not commonly used. Usually imprinted with a number 7 or nothing at all, these plastics are the most difficult to recycle.
What Plastics Are Recyclable?
There are six common types of plastics. Following are some typical products you will find for each of plastic:
PS (Polystyrene) - Example: foam hot drink cups, plastic cutlery, containers, and yogurt.
PP (Polypropylene) - Example: lunch boxes, take-out food containers, ice cream containers.
LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) - Example: garbage bins and bags.
PVC (Plasticised Polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl chloride)-Example: cordial, juice or squeeze bottles.
HDPE (High-density polyethylene) - Example: shampoo containers or milk bottles.
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) - Example: fruit juice and soft drink bottles.
Currently, only PET, HDPE, and PVC plastic products are recycled. PS, PP, and LDPE typically are not recycled because these plastic materials get stuck in the sorting equipment in recycling facilities causing it to break or stop. Lids and bottle tops cannot be recycled as well. "To recycle or Not to Recycle" is a big question when it comes to plastic recycling. Some plastic types are not recycled because they are not economically feasible to do so.
The Plastic Recycling Process
1, Sorting: It is necessary that every plastic item is separated according to its make and type so that it can be processed accordingly in the shredding machine.
2, Washing: Once the sorting has been done, the plastic waste needs to be washed properly to remove impurities such as labels and adhesives. This enhances the quality of the finished product.
3, Shredding: After washing, the plastic waste is loaded into different conveyer belts that run the waste through the different shredders. These shredders tear up the plastic into small pellets, preparing them for recycling into other products.
4, Identification and Classification of Plastic: After shredding, a proper testing of the plastic pellets is conducted in order to ascertain their quality and class.
5, Extruding: This involves melting the shredded plastic so that it can be extruded into pellets, which are then used for making different types of plastic products.
